Elena Cornaro Piscopia also known in English as Helen Cornaro. She was a noble-descended Venetian scholar who became one of the first women to receive an academic degree from a university in 1678 and the first to obtain a PhD degree.
She became interested in physics, astronomy and linguistics in her late teens and early twenties.
She was the third child of Gianbattista Cornaro-Piscopia and Zanetta Boni. Her mother was a peasant and at the time of her birth, her parents were not married.
Her full name is Elena Lucrezia Cornaro Piscopia. She died on July 26,1684 in Padua, Republic of Venice.
